A reciprocating air compressor, also known as a piston air compressor, is a type of positive displacement compressor that uses a piston moving back and forth inside a cylinder to compress air. This reciprocating motion, driven by a crankshaft, creates a vacuum on the intake stroke and compresses the air on the return stroke. The compressed air is then stored in a tank for later use. 

A piston air compressor will usually have between one to three pistons, with each being installed within a cylinder liner. A piston consists of a cylinder-shaped body, with piston rings installed around the main body (the piston rings are used for sealing the space between the piston and cylinder liner).
